The Society of Friends (Quakers) began in England in the 1650s, when they broke away from the Puritans. Pennsylvania was founded by William Penn, as a safe place for Friends to live and practice their faith.

Samuel Stroud was born in 1687 in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England.

His wife was named Ann. She had been married before and had a son named George Redmond (1713).

Samuel and Ann's children probably include:

Samuel Stroud.
Martha Stroud (1730, married Andrew Pitts),
Phoebe Stroud (1733, married Isaac Beeson),
Mary Stroud (1735, married Jonas Potts),
Ann Stroud (1738), and
Susannah Stroud (1740).

On September 6, 174 Morgan Bryan sold Samuel Strode 100 acres on Opequon Creek.

In 1760, Jonas Potts, blacksmith, and Mary his wife, sold 100 acres, part of the foregoing, to Samuel Stroud, Jonas signs as "Jonas Potts, Smith."

Samuel's will was filed on May 13, 1765

Opequon Creek is tributary of the Potomac River. It joins the Potomac northeast of Martinsburg and its source is at the foot of Great North Mountain. It is part of the boundary between Frederick and Clarke counties in Virginia and between Berkeley and Jefferson counties in West Virginia.
